For
all the talk about tax relief, this no-brainer isn't even on the
table. Powerful churches grow richer every day, while those who can
least
afford it
cover the
tax obligations of some of the wealthiest institutions
in the world. It's time to end welfare for churches. They can
and should pay their fair share, and thus relieve the tax burden
on everyone else.
Family
values? Putting food on the table is a family value. Affordable healthcare
is a family value. We need to stop
subsidizing religious organizations on the backs of the working
poor, and show that we do indeed place a great value on families.
Otherwise "Family Values" is just empty rhetoric.
No
one is asking you to abandon your church or your faith! Think about
it: when religious institutions are paying their fair share of
taxes, your own tax burden will be lessened proportionally, and you
will
be better
able to financially support whatever institution you wish.
WE
DO NOT WANT YOUR MONEY. SERIOUSLY.
WHAT
WE WANT
IS THIS: The
next time Congress is looking for an extra $20 billion a year
to finance a war - or
a tax cut - tell them to look no further than income tax on religious
payroll.
